Why Sharks Matter

We often hear that sharks are “apex predators”, but what does that mean?   An apex predator is the animal in an ecosystem that resides at the top or near the top, of their food chain.  These food chains can be very long which means that they play a crucial roll in maintaining the health and stability of their ecosystem.   For example, the shark’s ecosystem is the ocean and its food chain a vast majority of the fish within it.   Other apex predators on our planet are Saltwater Crocodiles, grizzly bears, and humans.

When we think of the ocean, we often romanticize our view it and see it as something vast and mysterious.  Just the very site of it has inspired incredibly popular art, literature, songs and movies.  But for our planet, the ocean has a much richer and deeper purpose.  Organisms that live in our oceans produce over 70% of the oxygen that we breath.   Our oceans are also responsible for absorbing about 70% of the CO2 that we produce.   That alone is reason enough for us to do everything in our power to insure that the oceans stay healthy and in balance.  But add to that the enormous amounts of food that we consume from our oceans, and you can quickly appreciate how important the ocean is to our very survival.

The easiest way to manage and maintain a healthy ocean is to minimize pollution and protect the apex predators.   But its hard to protect an animal that we often villainies.   By racing in Formula H2O It is our mission to take every opportunity to divulge the true nature of the shark and to draw attention to the important roll it plays in our survival.

The best way to do something is to visit our partner organizations - University of Miami RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program and/or Shark Savers.

The easiest way that you can help sharks is to protect their their environment.  For example of the ways you can do that is it to eat fish that are caught using sustainable practices.  For information on that go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program.  Also, work to minimize your trash as a disturbing amount of plastic products end up in the oceans.
